One of the principal tasks of a label such as this one has to take the pulse of the moment, of what’s going on right now in certain parcels, scenes, etc… This might be the case of the release we are hereby presenting.
Atilio Doreste and José Guillén are two improvisers that found each other in the Island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands reef. And they found each other by exploring, experimenting and developing an intuitive framework around a few core ideas and basic principles. Some of those ideas already explored and analysed on the previous release by Doreste on Audiotalaia “Shifting Boundaries” in which this Canarian photographer explored environmental improvisations with small circuit bending devices.
Doreste and Guillen meet quite often in fact, through social networks, one can follow their adventures; those happening almost weekly. Their explorations consists in exploring various locations and engaging in place, the soundscape by playing with it, altering it or de-form it. This basic premise it’s not new at all, many have been exploring and engaging with this kind of environmental performance as Dallas Simpson would define. “This side of Paradise” is just one more testimony of their sonic encounter and window into their own practice and exploration. Despite the fact that this is almost becoming a genre there is always something new to add to it.
In our case, in Audiotalaia we like to understand this kind of releases as some valuable documentation on the actual state of work by this two experimenters. More than the culmination of a workflow it seems that, “This Side Of Paradise” is just a milestone of a wider and more complex creative process Doreste and Guillen are pursuing.
So, the challenge here is not to invent the new genre in sound art if not: how to frame, present and disseminate a stream of creativity. Both ends: the artists working on their unattainable workflow and the label (a device in charge of pasting things in time, frame them and isolate it from the becoming) had to agree, edit and present a final work in the shape of a release. A release that captures the decisive moment, that explains it all.
